Location: Our lab is located in beautiful Fort Collins CO. It is 1 hr north of Denver, 1 hr from the Denver Airport, and 1 hr from Boulder. Fort Collins is consistently ranked one of the top places to live in the US as it is a small to mid-sized college town close to world-class hiking, skiing, rock climbing, and cycling. The town is designed with bicycle commuting in mind and is a relatively affordable place to live in comparison to coastal urban areas. Some funding is available for relocation.

The Osborne Nishimura Lab is seeking a lab manager/technician to be part of our team. This role will include contributing to our scientific mission through 1) projects at the bench (40 %), 2) lab administration and management (40 %), and 3) community outreach (20 %). The Nishimura lab studies how genomes guide development. We use the nematode worm as a model system. The lab combines computational biology, microscopy, and genetics approaches. In addition to our dedication to excellent scientific output, our group has a strong commitment to creating healthier scientific cultures through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion service work.
Job Responsibilities:
40 % Technician Role
- Genomics library prep
- Cloning, genotyping, worm breeding
- Worm husbandry
- Optimization of lab protocols
- Single-cell or low-input genomics sequencing role – if qualified
- C. elegans genome editing role – if qualified
- Original research project – if qualified
40 % Lab Manager Role
- Orchestrate lab ordering, receiving, and accounting responsibilities
- Be responsible for lab EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) administration
- Contribute to lab certification and compliance (IBC – Institution for Biosafety Committee)
- Manage undergraduate lab support tasks (plate pouring, lab chores)
- Carry out the more sophisticated lab support tasks (worm stock maintenance, etc)
- Some web development – if qualified
20 % Service
- Coordinate and organize a 4-part event series throughout the year (panel discussion, lab tours, parade of the majors, peer-to-peer welcoming)
- Assist with CommuniTea, annual dept. picnic, and other BMB (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology) Department social events
Benefits
- $35,000 – $45,000 / yr, start pay dependent on degree and previous experience
- typically subject to an annual 1 – 3 % raise structure
- full benefits as a CSU employee
- full time – 40 hr/week or negotiable
- reasonable pan for paid vacation time & sick leave
- flexibility – 30 hr/week in-person during the workweek required; 10 hr/week flexible (WFH/non-standard hours, etc)
- first 6 months are a temporary/probation period followed by year-to-year appointments; we are hoping for a minimum 2yr tenure; the position is funded for 5 yrs; renewal subject to grant status after that point

- This position can optionally work as a training position. In the training model, Dr. Nishimura works with each person to help develop their desired skillsets so the candidate can advance at the next job in their career. We work together to align the job experience with skills and career training goals
- The exact technician project will be based on a combination of lab needs, candidate skills, and candidate interests.
Requirements
- BS/BA minimally, MS preferred
